Craft Spells is the Seattle-based project of Justin Paul Vallesteros which can easily be called the lovechild of Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing. Like those pseudo-parents, Vallesteros’ Craft Spells have found a home on Captured Tracks, giving that label a superb roster. But more about the song. “You Should Close The Door” has the string of single-notes put together in riffs that has become a Captured Tracks staple, while also mixing in synths and a chugging bass line. Vallesteros’ distantly nostalgic vocal lines float on the reverb, becoming another instrument all on its own.

In other news, Craft Spells hit the road in early April for a month-long tour that hits pretty much the entire U.S., with two Canadian dates thrown in. Besides an April 9 date at Glasslands with Cloud Nothings and the Sundelles, Craft Spells will be touring with Beach Fossils, whose What A Pleasure EP just came out a week ago on Captured Tracks. This makes for a solid bill, and for those of us in the Baltimore/D.C. area, we’re lucky as the Craft Spells/Beach Fossils bill hits Ottobar on April 13 and DC9 on April 14, creating a cool and more accessible alternative to the Toro Y Moi dates on those same nights.
