MP3: Lower Dens – “Blue & Silver” (Plus Yours Truly Session, New Single & Tour Dates)

I’m going to come out and admit it: I missed the boat on Lower Dens in 2010. I don’t know how I did it, but I totally spaced on Jana Hunter and co. Even the fact that Twin-Hand Movement was recorded in Baltimore was not enough to catch my attention enough to check out this band. Now, at the end of the year when all the lists are coming out, seeing it up pretty high on a good number of lists really makes me feel guilty about not checking this sweet group out.

But there are chances to do so right now. The band recently played a Yours Truly Session (video after the jump) for the song “Batman,” Lower Dens’ next single that will be released b/w “Dear Betty Baby” on January 18, 2011 on Gnomonsong. Also available after the jump is a download of “Blue & Silver,” the first track off of Twin-Hand Movement.
“Batman” has a throwback feel with its sharp electric guitars. A friend described Lower Dens to me as some good quality post-punk, and I think I’d agree. “Batman” would not sound out of place during the early ’80s in some industrial city where the skies are gray with bleak outlooks. The riff is addicting and moves along well and Hunter’s vocals are flawless live.

On “Blue & Silver,” the feeling is a little more laid-back, but the drums are metronomic, pushing the tempo on the song. It has a great opening feel to it, and some of the steps the bass takes just feel good. That’s the only way to describe it.

The more I listen to “Blue & Silver,” the more the guilt that I did not give Twin-Hand Movement a fair shot becomes more and more. However, looking at the tour dates below, Lower Dens will be in DC twice in the next three months, including on March 11 at Black Cat with Wye Oak, a show that is circled on my calendar, especially after hearing Wye Oak’s “Civilian.”
