Video: Future Islands – “Before The Bridge”

A little under a month ago, Future Islands dropped the A-side from their next single due out on Thrill Jockey, and now they have a video to go with “Before The Bridge.” The clip is directed by Abram Sanders and vibes extremely well with the track. Watch it over at Pitchfork.tv.

MP3: Moss of Aura – “Titan”

If you’ve listened at all to the new Future Islands single “Before The Bridge,” you know how important Gerrit Welmers is to the band. But take away Sam Herring and Will Cashion and you’re left with Moss of Aura, Welmers’ synth project. In “Titan,” the synth lines that make Future Islands go are on full display, with a bit of tropical feel. It’s the perfect soundtrack to cruising along a flat swath of land near a body of water on a warm summer day.

Wading will be available via Friends Records in August 2011. Preorder it along with past Moss of Aura CDRs here.

Check out the “Titan” co-premiere on Altered Zones and Weekly Tape Deck.

MP3: Future Islands – “Before The Bridge”

Baltimore trio Future Islands just has it together. The stream of 2010 releases lacks a weak link, including the masterpiece, full-length In Evening Air. Now the group has released its first new track since November, when it dropped “The Ink Well” on a Friends Records split with Lonnie Walker.

“Before The Bridge” is in the same vein of the past Future Islands releases, with atmospheric synths and a bass line that drives the song forward. When I heard them perform this song back in March at Red Palace in D.C., I instantly took to the synth line that really gives the song an incredibly dance-y feel. While most Future Islands songs are dance songs, this one ups the ante, something that I am extremely pleased with. Although it needs almost no elaboration at this point, Sam Herring’s vocals are spot-on as usual.

Friends Records’ Brett Yale, who posted the track on Impose, writes that Double Dagger’s Denny Bowen plays live drums on “Before The Bridge,” amping up the rhythm section even more behind William Cashion’s bass. The “Before The Bridge” 7″ is due out July 19 on Thrill Jockey (limited to 750 copies) and the B-side will be called “Find Love,” and “is promised to be more of a dancefloor jam.”

Future Islands, Thank You, Ed Schrader’s Music Beat at Red Palace

Yes, there was a Future Islands review yesterday. Yes, there is a Future Islands review today. Yes, we go to see Future Islands a lot (but never together, I might add). Yes, Future Islands is awesome.

I headed into D.C. to the Red Palace for the first time, hearing mixed reviews on the quality of venue, other than the unanimous opinion that the location is horrible. And it is. Dear D.C., please put venues somewhere that is Metro accessible and/or has adequate parking. Not in Northeast where there’s no Metro stop, where H Street is a construction zone and the only parking is on the street. Not cool. Other people had told me that the sound at Red Palace was questionable as well, which seemed to be true for 1/3 of the show.

Future Islands at Creative Alliance (with pictures!)

Future Islands (photo by Vera)

Sure, you’re probably already thinking “man, Fresh Heirs reviewing yet another Future Islands show. How many can these guys do?” Well the answer is as many as we damn well want. But this one was in fact different. To commemorate the Residents Open House at Creative Alliance at the Patterson, Future Islands played 2 sets, one acoustic [for the third time I might add] in the gallery and one in the normal electric setup in the theatre of the artist residency.

Listen: Daniel’s Top 25 (Radio Friendly) Albums of 2010 (UPDATED!)

Today at 4 p.m. I’m going to be counting down my Top 25 (Radio Friendly) Albums of 2010 on WMUC. It’s yet another year-end list so I admit it’s going to be something that you’ve heard before, but I think I’ve thrown in some surprises to make it worth your while. Like my Top 25 (Radio Friendly) Songs of 2010, this list will be a little different than my final Top 25 Albums of 2010 list because there are some albums that I couldn’t find a radio friendly track from. So don’t be too surprised when that list is a little different. After the show, I’m going to publish the list below and have the two-hour extravaganza available for download, so be sure to hit that up as well.

Head on over to wmucradio.com at 4 p.m. to stream the show or directly stream it here.

Check back after the show for some updates!

Enjoy.

EDIT: Download the show here!

UPDATE (6:41 p.m.): The show went well, and all around and away we go:

Listen: Daniel’s Top 25 (Radio Friendly) Songs of 2010 (UPDATED!)

Today at 4 p.m. on University of Maryland’s WMUC, I’m going to be counting down my Top 25 (Radio Friendly) Songs of 2010 on “In Afternoon Air.” This list will be a little different from my Top 50 Songs of 2010 list, seeing as how there are some songs out there (“Younger Us” by Japandroids, anything by Kanye or Big Boi) that are not suitable for FM radio play. So for now, it’s just those songs that can be played on the radio. I think I have a pretty solid list put together, so definitely take the time to head on over at 4 p.m. to WMUC to check it out.

You can head over to wmucradio.com or directly stream WMUC here. Either way, it’s going to be a great show.

EDIT: Download the show here!

Afterwards, I’m going to post my Top 25 (Radio Friendly) Songs of 2010 here along with a link to download the show for your later listening pleasure.

Enjoy the show.

UPDATE (2:38 p.m.): Tune in at 3:30 because Denver’s Tennis is going to be in the studio on Victory Sweater, the show before mine. So stoked to see Tennis play in the studio because I’m missing them tonight at 9:30 Club. Listen here!

UPDATE (7:21 p.m.): So Tennis was late and didn’t actually get to play, which was a bit of a disappointment. However, they did sit down with Youth Orientation‘s Reese and seemed like some of the nicest people ever, which was awesome. And also, my Top 25 (Radio Friendly) Songs of 2010:

Winks at the Ottobar (with Future Islands and Lonnie Walker)

We’ve reviewed Future Islands a lot of times here at Fresh Heirs, and as awesome as their show was (Sam’s dance moves during “Old Friend” were immaculate) I can’t really come up with any more ways to describe their music. Lonnie Walker also were pretty good at the show too, but again, really don’t want to talk about them. Sorry if that offends anyone, but this is all about new music.

Winks were the number one opener on Saturday, starting around 10:30, and it was really something of a surprise. The band is comprised of Chase O’Hara (of INEVERYROOM fame as well) on guitar, sampler and synth, with the occasional support on another synth, and they seemed to create this fantastic sound despite the lack of people. I had listened to their self-titled cassette from Friends Records a few times before, and it was a nice late summer mix. It’s been described by most people as stoner jams, with titles like “Weed Makes Sex Weird” and “Fred Flintoned,” and I was curious how this lo-fi gem would transfer over to the live setting. The drum beats are hypnotic and the heavily reverbed guitar create this weird aura that shrouds Chase’s distinct, occasionally shouting vocals. They played a few songs I recognized: ”Weed Makes Sex Weird” and “She Cums in Colors,” which will be on one of Chase’s upcoming releases, along with a wonderful cover of The Smiths “Ask Me.” Although O’Hara doesn’t exactly have Morrissey’s unique baritone, but he did pull it off in his own wonderful style, with an epic drum loop and talented guitar work.

I really look forward to hearing more stuff from Winks in the future to see how they evolve.

-Kevin
